Transport Support

Door-to-Door Support to Get You Where You Need to Be

Norma
Staying Independent Without Driving

Giving up driving is a big change. For many older adults, it can feel like losing freedom—suddenly medical appointments, shopping, and social events are harder to reach. But losing your licence doesn’t have to mean losing independence. With the right transport support, your loved one can keep their routines, appointments, and connections.

Meet Norma:
After her eyesight changed, Norma had to stop driving. At first, she relied on family for lifts, but coordinating work schedules, appointments, and errands became stressful for everyone. She started cancelling specialist appointments and avoiding trips to the shops altogether.

Her son reached out to Summit Health Solutions. We arranged regular door-to-door transport: a friendly driver and car to take Norma to medical appointments, the supermarket, and her weekly social group. She was picked up at her front door, supported into the car, and escorted right into the clinic or venue.

With transport taken care of, Norma felt relieved and in control again—without needing to depend on family for every trip.

When to Arrange Transport Support

Transport support is ideal for older adults who want to keep attending appointments, events, and errands, but no longer feel safe or confident driving or using public transport on their own.

Our Transport services align with the Aged Care Quality Standards and the Australian Government’s Support at Home program (which has replaced the previous Home Care Packages system), providing safe, reliable, and tailored support.

Transport and the Support at Home Program

If your loved one has been approved for the Australian Government’s Support at Home program, transport may be included as part of their individual Support at Home budget, when it supports their care goals and helps them stay independent at home.

Through Support at Home, funding may be available for:

Transport to medical and health appointments
Transport to essential shopping and pharmacies
Transport to social and community activities that support wellbeing
Under the new funding model, the government contributes to the cost of approved services via your loved one’s Support at Home budget. Depending on income and circumstances, there may also be co-payments for some non-clinical, day-to-day supports like transport and social outings.

Identifying Your Parent’s Transport Needs
Changes in transport habits can creep in over time. You might notice your loved one: Cancelling appointments, relying heavily on one family member for lift, avoiding shops or social outings altogether. To work out whether your loved one might benefit from Transport support, start by noticing what’s changed.
Quick Steps You Can Take Today:
I’m going to check whether my parent is postponing or cancelling appointments because getting there is “too hard”.
I’m going to notice whether they’ve stopped going to the shops or community activities they used to enjoy.
I’m going to ask how confident they feel driving, using taxis, or taking public transport.
I’m going to speak with a professional and explore Transport support so my loved one can keep getting where they need to go safely.
