A Clean, Comfortable Home Without the Overwhelm

Irene
Keeping Her Home, Without the Heavy Lifting

For many older adults, the house doesn’t suddenly become “too much”—it slowly does. Vacuuming, mopping, laundry and cleaning the bathroom can turn from routine chores into exhausting tasks. But struggling to stay on top of housework shouldn’t be the reason someone has to leave their own home.

Meet Irene:
Irene always took pride in her home. After a hospital stay, she found it harder to bend, lift the washing basket, or stand long enough to clean the bathroom. Dust started to build up, the floors weren’t mopped as often, and laundry piled up. Her daughter felt torn between her own family, work and helping with the house.

They reached out to Summit Health Solutions. We put in place regular Domestic Assistance visits—vacuuming, mopping, cleaning the bathroom and kitchen surfaces, plus support with washing, folding and ironing. Irene stayed in charge of how she liked things done; we simply provided the extra pair of hands.

Now her home feels fresh and comfortable again—without Irene or her daughter feeling overwhelmed.

When to Arrange Domestic Assistance

Domestic Assistance is ideal for older adults who want to remain living at home, but find housework and laundry increasingly tiring, painful or unsafe.

Our Domestic Assistance services align with the Aged Care Quality Standards and the Australian Government’s Support at Home program (which has replaced the previous Home Care Packages system), providing practical, respectful support in the home.

Domestic Assistance and the Support at Home Program

If your loved one has been approved for the Australian Government’s Support at Home program, Domestic Assistance can often be included as part of their individual Support at Home budget. This program is designed to help older Australians stay at home safely by funding practical everyday supports.

Through Support at Home, funding may be available for:

General house cleaning that supports health and safety, such as:
Vacuuming, mopping and sweeping floors , cleaning bathrooms and toilets, wiping down kitchen benches and frequently used surfaces & taking out household rubbish
Laundry support, including:
Loading and unloading the washing machine, hanging out washing and bringing it back in, folding and basic ironing
The new funding model means the government covers a significant portion of the cost of approved services through your Support at Home budget. Depending on your income and circumstances, you may also contribute a co-payment for some non-clinical day-to-day supports, such as personal care.

Identifying Your Parent’s Domestic Assistance Needs
It can be easy to dismiss a bit of dust or a growing laundry pile—but over time, these changes can be a sign that help is needed. You might notice: Floors that aren’t vacuumed or mopped as often, bathrooms or toilets not being cleaned regularly, laundry piling up or clothes being worn longer than usual, rubbish bins overflowing or not being emptied. To work out whether your loved one might benefit from Domestic Assistance, start by gently observing their home environment.
Quick Steps You Can Take Today:
I’m going to notice whether my parent is avoiding showers, baths, or changing clothes.
I’m going to look for signs of slips, near-falls, or difficulties getting on and off the toilet or in and out of bed.
I’m going to check for changes in grooming—unbrushed hair, unshaven face, or poor oral hygiene.
I’m going to speak with a professional and arrange a Personal Care visit to discuss what kind of support would help my loved one feel safe and comfortable.
